Cameron Street at the Farm Show Building, Harrisburg PA, early 1940s
This is a photo shot by my father, E.L. Ward, as he was on his way to the circus set up in tents north of the Farm Show Building. This is Cameron Street just north of Maclay. The Farm Show Building is on the left. If you stood here today, besides getting run over by commuters, you'd be looking toward the "River Relief Route" - where Cameron Street crosses Route 81 (an interstate highway). The iron fence lining the right side of Cameron Street is the westernmost boundary of the State Hospital grounds. It's about here that the current entrance to the State Hospital is.
Also north of the Farm Show Buildings was the old Harrisburg City Incinerator. I remember riding there with my father when I was a kid. He was a wallpaper-hanger and disposed of the scraps at the incinerator. Inside the long, narrow building was a cement floor with three big holes. The furnaces were down there. The whole place was dark and the fire glowed orange-red from these holes, so bright it hurt my eyes. My father would walk up to one of these and pitch a box of scrap paper in, then another. I was scared to go near. There were no railings or walls - just the flat floor with big holes glowing orange-red. I still have dreams where those images and feelings filter in...
